I have battled manic depression for most of my life. Twenty four years ago it exploded into a nightmare of torture and suffering. In order for me to survive I began creating with my hands. I began to draw and make birthday cards for my loved ones, utilizing colored pencils and pastels. I decorated our apartment with flowers, pictures and lovely candles and precious nic nacs, which symbolized the best parts of me. Several years later I taught myself how to bead, making amulet bags, crystal earrings and beautiful pearl necklaces. The more I used my hands for beauty the more my soul would rise above this illness, dispelling the darkness into the light.
I didn't always win. There were time I could only string beads or organize my stores. At times mixed with many tears and pain. I never gave up.
One of the things that saved me was what I had learned as a dancer and choreograper. The flight of heaven that had been in my limbs was now in my hands. And through that the healing transpired, not only for my life but for those who bought my beaded work. Many healers used my art for their healing on others. A ripple in a pond of the waters of mercy.
During the summer of 2013 I suffered a horrible set back. I was terrified I would take my own life and used my prayer of chanting to transform this death march into a life wish. I cannot remember how I found the site of Griselda Tello on Etsty, but I was profoundly moved by her art as a doll maker and artist. I contacted her and she started me on a path of doll making and a journey that would change my life.
I studied everything I could find in the art of doll making especially Goddess and Spirit dolls. I gathered sticks, twigs, drifwood, stones, and just went to work. I had a lot of supplies already and could combine my bead art within my doll art. Through my journeys I met Arzie Hodge who has since become my Dear Friend. She has been making dolls for over 40 years. Since I've always had a good eye for design and color I was able to bring the outdoors of the natural world through my work, through my heart. I now am studying Primitive and Folk art dolls. I have made several and realize the journey never ends.
I find the connection between all things universally, magical and stunning existing beyond an anatomical structure, perhaps elements that our sciences have not yet discovered. I try with my whole heart to bring the beauty and essence of that magic into all levels of my life and express it through my art. The rhythm and enchantment of this world and beyond have been a part of my life since my early childhood.
Creativity is in all living things and a sanctuary of the profound resides within us all. -Robin Alice
